While the high Himalaya makes up Nepal 's northern region, the southern lowland known as the Terai is covered with dense tropical jungles teeming with diverse wildlife and exotic birds. Here you will find some of the most exciting safari destinations in the world. You will be going into deep jungle on elephant back or four-wheel drive vehicle to view wild animals in their natural habitat. Other thrills are canoe rides on the Jungle Rivers , nature walks, bird watching excursions, and village tours.

Among the 14 national parks and wildlife reserves in the Kingdom, the Royal Chitwan National Park (932 sq. km) is the most popular safari destination. More than 43 species of animals are found in Chitwan. The endangered one-horned rhino, Royal Bengal tiger, Gharial crocodile, four-horned antelope, striped hyena, and the Gangetic dolphin are the main attractions here. The best part is that it is close to Kathmandu and easily accessible (only 165 km overland), and Bharatpur airport adjoining the park is a mere 25-minute flight away (there are daily flights from Kathmandu ). Many adventurers also choose to go down by raft. However you go, a jungle safari is an experience you will remember for a long time.

Royal Chitwan National Park

The Royal Chitwan National Park is another highlight of Nepal . Chitwan is listed among the World Heritage Natural Sites. The national park lies in the plains of the Terai and is home to thousands of species of bird, plant and animal life.

The one horned rhino, Bengal tiger, gaur bison, elephant and freshwater dolphins are some of the usual residents of this Eden . Marsh mugger and the endangered Gharial crocodiles populate the emerald waters of its rivers.

The best season to visit the park is between March and May when the tall dense elephant grass is cut or burnt. The game is attracted out in the open by the fresh grass and can be seen more easily. Its best to plan a visit early in the year as May can be very hot. The park is easily accessible from Kathmandu or Pokhara and has facilities that caters to every budget. A great way to visit the park is after a two day raft trip on the Trisuli and Narayani Rivers .

Chitwan means both 'heart of the jungle' and 'leopard forest' and both indicate the lush and dense depth of the area. Easiest of the National Parks to reach, the park is one of the richest wildlife preserves in Asia , and the most famous in Nepal . The park lies in the Chitwan Valley between the Silwalik (Churia) and the Mahabharat ranges. It is drained by two rivers, the Narayani and the Rapti. The indigenous people are the Tharus who were immune from malaria.

The park actively engaged in the scientific studies of several species of wild fauna and flora.
There are many worthwhile places to visit. While a jungle walk with a trained naturalist can reveal the nearby vicinities, and elephant ride is the best way to penetrate the deep jungle to view rhino, the elusive tiger, leopard, sloth bear and Gaur (wild cattle). The rivers contain crocodiles and Masher fish, and an evening visit to the elephant stable is also worthwhile. Watching elephants being bathed and fed are other memorable experiences. Chitwan is a veritable preserve for diverse animal and bird life, rare reptiles, and ecology.
